Industry leadership & structures
Discussion Paper and Industry Workshops
Throughout May and June 2007, a series of workshops were held across the country to provide a forum to discuss the industry’s future organisational structures and define the priorities and need for change.
The following discussion paper was developed to engage the industry in a dialogue about possible options for future structures to meet the current and emerging needs of the Australian vegetable industry.

Industry leadership & structures as a Foundation project:
Rationale
The Taking Stock report suggested that sustainable growth of the Australian Vegetable Industry is held back by, among other things, its lack of cohesion and communication across the supply chain, and by inefficient structures reflecting internal fragmentation and factionalism. These factors reduce the capacity of the industry to jointly identify, create, co-invest in and capture opportunities in a way that successful industries take for granted.
Outcomes
The expected outcomes of an intensive investigation aimed developing industry leadership capabilities and responsive industry structures include:
- A cohesive and purposeful industry engaging all stakeholders to influence the future.
- Recognition of vegetable industry organizations as professional, representative and credible.
- Efficient and responsive industry structures delivering valuable services that meet changing investor needs.
Challenges
- Developing a shared commitment to industry cohesion and unity of purpose.
- Moving to new structures that involve a through-chain, expertise-based and responsive approach to decision making.
- Leadership skills development as an ongoing industry investment priority.
- Leading rapid industry change with multiple stakeholder interests to balance.
The AVID Group has commissioned the consulting firm Strategic Business Development to prepare a scoping paper to inform discussion on industry structures to meet the needs of the vegetable industry into the future. The recommendations are being considered by the Group.
